Challenges for Veterans
Serving in the Armed Forces can provide Veterans with skills, confidence, discipline and a sense of accomplishment. For many veterans, their time of service is a point of pride and they are happy that they gave a part of their life to serve their country.
However, Veterans of all ages are also at risk for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), substance abuse, depression, homelessness, unemployment and suicide. They deserve better. Those who volunteered their time and their lives should have a safe place to call home. They should have a supportive environment to pursue sobriety, good mental health, education and work. They should have the time needed to transition off the street and back into a life that is productive, healthy and positive. They should have a place like the Dodge House, where structure, compassion, high expectations and a long term commitment to each veteran has led to great outcomes for many residents. They took a huge chance when they signed on to serve. They deserve to have a second chance too. |
